How thick should a yoga mat be?
The thickness of a yoga mat will be dependent on the type of practice undertaken. As a general rule, yoga mats that are around 4mm thick are universally standard and make a great option for most practices. However, thinner mats provide a solid point of contact with the ground, and are less likely to get caught during movement, they provide increased stability and are best suited to more active practices. Mats that are 6mm or thicker become more cushion like, and are not best suited for active workouts. Instead, these thicker mats (those that are over 6mm) should be used in restorative yoga practices or for those who require extra padding and support.

How to clean a yoga mat?
It's unavoidable that with extensive use, your mat will get dirty. To clean your mat we recommend using a gentle cleanser or spray. Simply spray all over the map and gently wipe with a damp cloth. Alternatively, for simple home solution, mix a few drops of dish soap in a large bowl of water and rub the mat down using a circular motion and ensure you dry the mat with a clean towel to prevent any mildew or mould from forming. Though you should always check the instructions according to the type of mat that you own, and they should always be left to dry before being rolled up and stored out out direct sunlight.

What is a yoga mat made of?
Mats can be made from a wide range of substrates; including PVC, Rubber, Cork, Microfibre, TPE, Jute and Cotton. Usually, yoga mats are made of vinyl PVC, foam, or synthetic rubber which are not environmentally conscious or biodegradable. At Yogamatters, we value eco-friendly production and materials, which is why our collection of own brand mats are made from a variety of sustainably harvested and recycled materials such as our Aqua Evolve made from algae. Our selection of mats from other leading brands are made from a variety of materials including cork, natural tree rubber, organic cotton, and jute to ensure that you can practice with a clear conscious.

How to make a yoga mat less slippery?
To increase the grip of your mat, you may wish to degrease it by spraying with a solution of salt water. After leaving the solution on the mat for at least 1 hour, gently clean the mat with plain water and a cloth or soft brush. This should help to make a new mat feel less slippery, and the process can be repeated several times until you feel as though the grip has improved.

How to choose a yoga mat for my practice?
When considering what yoga mat to buy, there are certain factors that you'll need to consider. First of all, you'll need to think about the type of practice you want to undertake, do you want to practice hot yoga or restorative yoga? Secondly, you'll need to think about the thickness of the mat, if you want to practice restorative yoga but know that you'll need extra padding and support, you will want a thicker matt (over 6mm), though for a regular yoga flow, it is recommended you choose something thinner. Thirdly, you will need to consider the size in terms of length, find one that suits your height. And finally, you will need to consider colour and style to suit your personal preference!
